Company Internship

Please note the Company Internship Program will not be held in 2011. It will recommence in 2012.

frontcover.jpgIn 2010 Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre will offer the 7th Company Internship Program. This innovative program provides one of the few opportunities in Australia for emerging artists (actors, directors, producers, teachers & administrators) to acquire the skills and contacts necessary to make the transition into the professional performing arts industry; or for established artists to re-skill and rejuvinate. The aim is to cultivate arts leaders with the ability to carve out and sustain successful careers in the performing arts industry.

Closely mentored by the Zen Zen Zo Artistic Directors and company members, the Interns undertake a series of intensive training units in acting, physical theatre, auditioning, networking, marketing, grant writing, teaching, administration, finance, preparing budgets, fitness training, sports psychology, as well as meeting some of Australia’s preeminent Arts Leaders, and performing in a Zen Zen Zo production.

There are also 1-4 places provided for a director, who in addition to the above units will also be mentored specifically in theatre direction by the Artistic Directors whilst creating their own work.

The 2010 Company Internship will take place over a 6-month period. As the program will be both physically and psychologically demanding, the Internship needs to take top priority during this period and participants can not undertake either full-time work or study. Entrance is by application only (see below), and a maximum of 12 Interns (including the Intern Director) will be accepted into the program.

Program Aims

The overall aims of the program can be summed up as follows:
  • An advanced actor-training program, specialising in Physical Theatre
This happens through 3 weekly training sessions, Stomping Ground and Masterclass Week, the unit on auditioning, and the graduating performance.
  • A leadership course, with a strong focus on personal development. This is facilitated through sessions with a qualified sports psychologist, the “Enneagram” weekend workshop, a rigorous and truthful learning environment, and regular assessment sessions with the Artistic Director.
  • A career-shaping experience, which helps applicants identify their strengths and plan their future paths within the arts industry. This occurs through exposure to a number of different artistic fields, including directing, teaching, administration, and the opportunity to network with high-profile industry figures in the “Masters” seminars.

Is the Program just for Actors?

Central to the driving philosophy behind this program is the idea that artists need to be equipped with many skills in order to survive long term. Acting, directing, teaching, producing and administrative skills may all be required for you to realise your visions in the performing arts in Australia. This program therefore works to identify and strengthen your natural talents as an artist, and provide you with new ones that will give you the maximum opportunities to gain employment in this highly competitive industry. Since 2006, the Internship has also provided one to three places for a director, who will be mentored by the Artistic Director, whilst still undertaking all of the other Internship components.
The Zen Zen Zo Company Internship therefore includes 12 major components spanning a 6-month period:
