Receiving more 5-star reviews than any other show at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe, and shortlisted in the final seven for TOTAL THEATRE AWARDS (Physical/Visual Theatre), ZEITGEIST is set to repeat its success at the Adelaide Fringe.

ZEITGEIST is performed in Zen Zen Zo's infamous physical-theatre style which fuses Butoh, Cabaret, Burlesque, Comedy, and Contemporary Dance. ZEITGEIST is an award-winning collection of raw and provocative dance-theatre pieces that reflect ‘the spirit' (GEIST) ‘of our times' (ZEIT). This explosive production is an apocalyptic vision of our times presented through a maelstrom of 8 bared bodies on stage.

Dante's Inferno

In 2010, the highly popular IN THE RAW Studio Season production will be Dante's Inferno. Based on one of the greatest works of world literature, the first book in Dante's Divine Comedy (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso) which is richly imaginative and intensely political, Dante's Inferno will unpack the concept of Hell in the contemporary world.

Directed by Zen Zen Zo Associate Artist, Stephen Atkins (Sub-Con Warrior 2.0, Dracula), and performed in Zen Zen Zo's highly visual and physical house style, this performance will take audience members through three stations around the grounds of Brisbane's heritage-listed Old Museum Building. Book early to avoid disappointment!

My Sublime Shadow

mysublimeshadow.jpgMy Sublime Shadow is a new work that fuses the decadent, risqué German Weimar-era Cabaret, with 1920s Burlesque and Butoh. This show combines the talents of Zen Zen Zo performers with long-term collaborators, singer/songwriters Emma Dean and Jacob Diefenbach.

The show investigates the Jungian archetype of the Shadow, which represents our darker sides, unacceptable impulses, chaotic wild selves, our demons, our fears. The Shadow comes out to play in dreams, fantasies, nightmares... Jung insists that the only path forward is to meet our Shadows, to confront them, to "devour" them.

My Sublime Shadow will be a night of cabaret and dance-theatre featuring both famous and original songs sung by Emma Dean and Jacob Diefenbach, as they journey inexorably towards meeting and "devouring" their shadows...

Dates: 28 August - 4 September, 2010
Times: Tues/Wed/Thurs/Sat 8.00pm
Fri 9.00pm

Schools Touring Production
with
Queensland Arts Council

odyssey2010s.jpgOne of the greatest adventure tales ever recorded, The Odyssey is the exciting epic journey of Ulysses, the mighty Greek hero. Based on Zen Zen Zo's 2004 Matilda Award winning production, The Odyssey has been adapted especially for the classroom for touring throughout Queensland in 2009.

Introduce your students to the hero who won the Trojan war with his giant wooden horse and battled gods and monsters as he travels through mythical lands in search of Ithaca, his beloved home. An exploration of what it means to be a hero, this production of The Odyssey features stunning costumes, atmospheric original music and a compelling display of world-class theatrical skill make this an unforgettable introduction to the magical world of Greek Mythology and storytelling at its timeless best.

In addition to this production, a 90min workshop - Unleash the Warrior: Body Bootcamp - is being offered. The workshop introduces students to Eastern and Western physical theatre philosophies and explores the principles of becoming an “Extraordinary Actor”. With demonstrations by world-class performers and costumes from some of Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre’s most famous productions, this workshop is an amazing tool for teaching students techniques to heighten physical awareness, focus, breath and voice.
