Receiving more 5-star reviews than any other show
at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe, and shortlisted in the final seven for TOTAL
THEATRE AWARDS (Physical/Visual Theatre), ZEITGEIST is set
to repeat its success at the Adelaide Fringe.
ZEITGEIST is performed in Zen Zen Zo's infamous physical-theatre style
which fuses Butoh, Cabaret, Burlesque, Comedy, and Contemporary Dance. ZEITGEIST is
an award-winning collection of raw and provocative dance-theatre pieces that
reflect ‘the spirit' (GEIST) ‘of our times' (ZEIT). This explosive production
is an apocalyptic vision of our times presented through a maelstrom of 8 bared
bodies on stage.
"An edgy gender-bending
triumph" (Adelaide Advertiser)
"Two
questions: what took them so long to come to Edinburgh, and when are
they coming back?" (The Scotsman)
"The
audience greet them with rapturous applause. They have surely seen one of the
finest shows to come to the Fringe in years." (Hairline Reviews)
"Imperfectly
perfect theatrical dance by a world-class company" (Broadway Baby)
"Completely captivating" (The Scotsman)

ZEITGEIST is
performed in Zen Zen Zo's infamous
house-style which mixes Japanese Butoh, European Burlesque, Cabaret, comedy,
contemporary dance and performance art. Renowned for the superb athleticism of its
performers and the melding of ancient Asian dance-theatre traditions with
popular culture, Zen Zen Zo is at
the forefront of contemporary experimental performance in Australia.
Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre is proudly Australian and is making their
Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut in 2009. Founded in 1992, Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre is notorious for their innovative,
shocking and visually striking performance style. Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre has captivated audiences in countless
sell-out seasons in Australia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
The Australian has called Zen Zen Zo ‘the
masters of physical theatre', while The
Japan Times ‘innovative, international theatre of compelling power.'
ZEITGEIST
promises to challenge and excite audiences in Edinburgh and beyond. Make this Festival one you will never forget.

2008 AUSTRALIA SELL-OUT SEASON, WHAT THE CRITICS SAID:
"From the moment they unfurl until the closing number, Zeitgeist is an emotional wonder of a production that feels like a dream... It is as accessible as it is beautiful."
Mandy Kohler - Time Off Magazine
"The twenty-one dancers begin as pulsating foetal buds, gradually unfurling to greet their fellow beings in a richly choreographed ensemble piece that sets the reflective tone of the succeeding eight dances... That this production can proudly assert the appellation of Zeitgeist - meaning 'the spirit (geist) of our times (Zeit)' - is a testament to this company's continual strive for avant-garde excellence and exploratory awareness of contemporary issues."
Seanna Van Helten - Rave Magazine
"Zeitgeist is as brave as performance gets... It certainly jolts one out of any mainstream theatrical complacency. Whatever you take away, you've had an experience."
Olivia Stewart - The Courier Mail
"It is possible that Butoh has never been more accessible, more relevant and more fun than when it's done by Brisbane's Zen Zen Zo."
Mandy Kohler - Time Off Magazine
