ZEITGEIST LIVE PERFORMANCE DVD

Zeitgeist is a retrospective of Zen Zen Zo's Butoh inspired dance-theatre works since 2000 with several new works created specifically for this season. Drawing from productions such as Unleashed, Those with Lucifer, and most recently our international collaborations with Punk-Caberet band The Dresden Dolls, ZEITGEIST is a collection of raw and provocative pieces that reflect "the spirit (Geist) of our times (Zeit)". The aim in ZEITGEIST is to explore how we as human beings are meeting ourselves, each other, and the earth at this point in human history. The nine dances weave together the big issues of our age - spiritual apathy, terrorism, global warming - with universal themes, archetype and myth. It is an apocalyptic vision of our future, realised through the maelstron of 21 Butoh bodies on stage. Teachers' Notes provided on request.

The Cult of Dionysus

Based on Euripides' Greek classic, 'The Bacchae,' The Cult of Dionysus was the hit of the inaugural Brisbane Festival in 1996. First performed in Japan in 1994, this ground-breaking production was a part of the first wave of physical theatre works to be showcased in Australia.
Drawing on Japanese theatre styles and philosophies to capture the rawness of the Greek tragedies, The Cult of Dionysus tells the story of the fatal clash between King Pentheus and Dionysus using dynamic movement, spoken text, music and spectacular design.

UNLEASHED
First debuted in 1996 in the old Princess Theatre, Brisbane, Zen Zen Zo's Unleased later toured to the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2000. A sell-out hit in both seasons, the work unleashes a nightmarish world of fears and fantasies through a series of six dances.
"This is a beautiful wordless theatre that communicates on a deeper level than the mere intellectual, showing Zen Zen Zo at the height of its powers. Here we see the perfection of the naked human body pushed to the limits of ecstasy and pain, a rare oppotunity to experience a flawless embodiment of wit and passion." - The Courier Mail, 2000
